Charles Everett Cooley

Charles Everett, a son of James and Minerva Cooley, was born in Grove Township, Jasper County, October 17, 1883 and departed this life September 17, 1926, age 42 years, 11 months. He was one of a family of eight children, one sister and mother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure and aged father, three brothers, Willis of Wheeler, John of Effingham, and Leonard of Marshall; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Clark, Mrs. Minnie Myers of Montrose, and Mrs. Ora Brewer of Woodbury, also a host of nephews and nieces, by whom he was greatly admired.
He never connected himself with any religious denomination, but he continually searched the scriptures to know the word of the Lord.
Everett was better known as Barnum-a nick-name which he acquired when a small boy. Barnum was a highly respected friend, and neighbor, in the community among a wide circle of friends. He never met a man or child but to make a friend, and leave them with a word of cheer. None knew him but to love him.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday 11:00 o'clock a.m. by Rev. Katy of Greenup and interment in Island Creek Cemetery. More than two hundred autos formed the funeral cortege, bearing relatives and friends from far and near, who had come to pay their respects and view the remains before being tenderly laid to rest. The large crowd in attendance showed the high esteem in which he was held.
