Howard W. Cooley, 84, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, 2015, at Morning Sun Care Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1931, in Iowa City, he was the son of Homer D. and Winifred Wolfert Cooley. On Aug. 20, 1953, he married Janice E. Hamilton at What Cheer.
Mr. Cooley graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1949 and from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant in 1953 with a degree in history and political science. He operated Cooley’s Drug Store in Morning Sun from 1956 to 1978, managed Central State Theater in Oskaloosa from 1978 to 1983 and worked in maintenance at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility until he retired in 1997.
He attended the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun.
He was a member of the Morning Sun Lions where he was treasurer for 24 years. He also was a member of the former Zerah Lodge 652 A.F. & A.M. in Morning Sun until its merger with the Wapello Lodge No. 5 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Louisa County Historical Society, where he also was treasurer, and a member of the garden club in Morning Sun.
Survivors include his wife of Morning Sun; one daughter, Jill Cooley of Des Moines; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother and one son.
The family will meet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. Masonic rites will be given at 6 p.m. following the visitation.
The funeral for Mr. Cooley will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, with the Rev. Sue- Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.
Memorials been established for the Morning Sun Ambulance, the Morning Sun Volunteer Fire Department and the Morning Sun Lions.
