Submitted by michael_95073 Noted added Tue Apr 10 20:07:09 2007 The following was contributed to the John Cooley mailing list (list.johncooley.net) by Mary Cooley in April 2007: --quote-- This is a letter written to Mildred (Cooley) Tallant by my husband's great-grandfather, John Pierce Cooley. I have a photocopy of the original letter which is in the possession of Dennis Young. Letter as written: Jan 12 - 1932 My Dear Mrs. Tallant Santa Barbara, Cal Yours of the 5th Inst at hand and contents noted but must say I am unable to enlighten you atall for I know but little of my ancestors. My Grandfather Joseph was Born and raised in Virginia and died in Missouri having moved to the latter State when a young man. There he raised a family of five boys and one girl, Evaline. Three of the boys: E.C., C.C. and my Father Jackson Cooley came to Oregon in 1845 locating in Marion County this State. I was born 1852 and raised in Marion Co. but have lived in this Linn Co. since 1879. My Father was born in Missouri in 1816, died in Oregon in 1884. Aside from his brothers who came to Oregon with him I know nothing of my own kin so you will see that as for ancestors I am near a blank. It has the proof of 11 of Joseph's children. Here's a small portion of it: --quote-- To the Hon. [uncl] Judges of the Circuit Court of Clay County State of Missouri Your Petitioners John Cooley, Elizabeth White and her husband William White & Eveline Wilson, Margaret Wilson and William L. Wilson, infant heirs of Hannah Wilson formerly Hannah Cooley by their Guardian William Wilson Eveline Officer and James Officer her husband Christopher Cooley, Harrison Cooley, Jackson Cooley, Franklin Cooley and Ely Cooley would respectfully show unto your honour, that your petitioners, together with William Joseph Handley infant heir of Casander Handley formerly Casander Cooley, and Mary Mitchell, are the owners in fee simple of the following describing tract of land to wit the west half of the SouthWest quarter of Section One of Township Fifty One in Range thirty, containing eighty acres, and part of the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section One of same Township and Range, containing twenty acres, and the West half of the northwest quarter of Section Twelve & and Township and Range Containing 80 acres, in the whole tract one hundred and eighty acres, situated lying & being in Clay County Mifsouri of [unclear] that your Petitioners & the said William Joseph Handley and Mary Mitchell denied title to said land by descent and inheritance from their ancestor Joseph Cooley decd --endquote-- Submitted by michael_95073 Note added Wed Apr 27 16:07:16 2011 I don't know the origin of this transcription or the author of the introduction. It concerns Joseph's daughter, Elizabeth White. Mary Cooley provides the following notes: (Note by Mary Lou Cooley: There are a number of inaccuracies in Elizabeth's story. Elizabeth's mother died when she was 11, c1805. Elizabeth's father, Joseph, married Keziah Casey in 1807 in KY. Sister Mary "Polly" married Jesse Mitchell 23 March 1811 in KY. Joseph Cooley & family moved from KY to MO between 1811-1812. Elizabeth married in MO in 1814. Brother Harrison was born in MO in 1814. Elizabeth was born c1794.) --quote-- The following story was first published in Liberty Tribune August 1878 - Clay Co., MO, later published Jan 22, 1925 pg 2 of Crete News in Crete, NE. Article given to Nebraska newspaper by Mrs. John Jeffries, great granddaughter of Elizabeth White: A PIONEER STORY by Elizabeth Cooley White I was born in North Carolina and taken by my parents to Kentucky, where I remained until I was seventeen years old. In my eleventh year, death visited our family and claimed my mother for its victim, leaving six children. I being the third child; not withstanding I summed up sufficient courage to take charge of the children which were younger than myself. I had to fill the place of mother and sister. I spun and made clothes for them and tried to teach them the ways of truth and life. In the year AD 1816, I with the rest of my father's family, came from Kentucky to Missouri. We lived without bread from October until corn would grit. We came first to Luther Island, and from there to Boone's Lick. My father's wagon was the first to mark the road. We had to cut our own road and make our own bridges. I was the first white woman that ever traveled the road. We lived in peace for one year, then we had to fort for protection. We were forted four years, then peace was made. I was married under a large oak tree, on the Fourth of July, at the first picnic ever held in Missouri, to William White. I cooked my own wedding dinner, my bread was bent in mortar and my meats were wild meats of all kinds; my wedding dress was not as some might think, it was not home spun, neither was it in a pin back, but it was cut to suit the times. We lived twelve years in Howard County, then moved to Clay County where I now am, then to the new Platte purchase, then to Clinton County, then to Andrew County which is now my home. When Platte County was settled my oldest daughter and I were the first females that settled in that county. In settling on the new counties all that were old enough to hold a line had to help build houses and clear. I have spun thread out of nettles all day; then piled and burned brush until midnight. I am now in my eighty-eighth year; my husband and I lived together sixty-four years. He was then taken from me. We raised eleven children all to be grown; they are all alive but three. Is there anyone of this day that can say they have seen two of their fourth generation? I have of mine. Children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great grandchildren's children, are in number one hundred and forty-six. Daniel Boone was the head commander of our fort, he and his two sons were the first white men that were ever in the state of Missouri. He was here two years before I came to the state. A Green county birth at Goose Creek would, in fact, infer a birth before that date. Has anyone looked at these? Green County, Ky.
