My notes say that James died in 1835 but I think he may have been confused with James Alvin Cooley as, evidently, he was still alive in 1840:
1840 > MISSOURI > RANDOLPH > NO TWP LISTED

I don't know that this is the right James. I could be Joseph's or Daniel's James. All three were about the same age. In any event, this man had no children living with him. Nor does the James of 1840.

Note that the 1830 James is living near Randolph White.

I think this is the same James described for 1850 TN in this Sep 2009 email from Jim Cooley:
--quote--
the 1850 Dickson TN Census with James, 56 ,(NC) and Martha, 49,
(VA) with son Willow, 13, and daughter Polly, 10. They were living a few
doors down from the Lewis family, including Mary Lewis,10, who married my
GG gf E.C. (aka Ervin/Irvin) in 1858, same county.

I'm reviewing our emails. It all makes sense. I think you're on the right track. The widower John H Cooley commits suicide in Howard co MO in 1846. The childless couple, James Cooley and Martha Bearden (1830 and 1840 census) of neighboring Randolph county, gain custody and move to Dickinson co TN, appearing in the 1850 census there.
Proof might be found in the court records of Howard co MO for c1846-1850 and in the deeds for Randolph co MO and Dickinson co TN for the same years.
It all fits nicely...and backed up by your DNA:
John Cooley (c1840-c1811)
James Cooley (1772-1821) m Elizabeth
John H Cooley (1812-1846) m Eliza Locke
E C Cooley
And then we have the adoptive parents:
John Cooley (c1840-c1811)
Perrin Cooley Sr (1769-1840) m Sarah
James Cooley (1797-1950+) poss m Martha Bearden
adopted E C Cooley
I think it's an excellent theory and ties up every detail nicely, down to the confusion over EC's parents' names. Personally, I'm convinced.

This came from Mark Price, Randolph (MO) County Recorder. The fact that James sold land a few months after the suicide of his cousin, John H Cooley), aids the theory that he is the James who is found in Dickson county TN, 1850 census.

Note that Polly was born in MO c1840. It's likely, then, that James moved to TN after that year.

Some of us are beginning to explore an idea that James Cooley was the James of Randolph county who shows on the 1830 and 1840 census (childless) and, therefore, a first cousin of John H Cooley, who may have been the same man who committed suicide in 1846. The children attributed to James may, then, have been John's. Stronger evidence is needed but all the pieces are fitting nicely.

Another possibility here is that James was really John and the other are those found together on the 1860 Dickson census.
1850 > TENNESSEE > DICKSON > MIDDLE DIST
Series: M432 Roll: 876 Page: 142
James Cooley 56 m NC...................John Cooley?
Martha Cooley 49 f VA..................Martha Bearden Cooley?
Willows Cooley 13 m MO.................Milo Cooley?
Polly Cooley 10 f MO...................May Ann (Cooley) Storey?
Milo's is rarely found, if ever, spelled correctly in the census records.
