From Sandra Stanton:

Subject: Mathias M. Cooley
Date: Thu, June 26, 2008 6:30 pm

Mathias is listed in the database: U.S. Army, Register
of Enlistments, 1798-1914 because he served in the
Mexican War.

The details given are the following.

Cooley, Mathias M.,
age 32, dark eyes, hair, complexion,
5 feet 8 1/2 inches
Born Howard county, Missouri and was a farmer
enlisted: 10 July 1847
by whom: Magruder at Batesville
he was discharged on 22 July 1848 -- expiration of
service
discharged at Carrollton, ____; as a private.

I believe Carrollton was "Camp Carrollton" given for
an earlier person.

Also, the blank that I have above looks like "La".
don't know what that means.

I cannot shed too much light on Pleasant Cooley, but his parents were Matthias Cooley and Martha (Patsy) Whitney. They were married in Howard County, Missouri December 11, 1839. I have been chasing the Whitneys forever (it seems) and I feel certain Martha was the sister of my gggrandfather, or at least related. I found Matthias and Martha in the 1850 census in Izard County, Arkansas...

...Martha's parents were Wade H. and Susan (maiden name unknown) Whitney.

Joseph Horton, Mathias's killer, was apparently married to one of Mathias's daughters.

Other sources say the killer was Thomas Horton.

Author David Johnson sent this via email Dec 2008. These were probably daughters of Mathias's:

George Vanderburg married Mary Ann Cooley October 28, 1860
Albert Kelsey married Sophronia Cooley March 9, 1875

The first letter for "Perinn" had evidently been changed from one letter to another. It's almost impossible to tell what it was intended to be. However, the letters that follow, e r i n n, seem clear enough to me--the final two ens being lumped together much like a four-humped em. Indexes often show the name "Ransom", which is clearly not a reasonable transcription. "Aerinn" is a commonly seen transcription--and that could be correct. However, knowing that Perrin was a forename often used in the family, "Perinn" is my best guess.

By comparison, here is the census entry for Mathias's cousin. Perrin Cooley Jr, 1860 Macon Co MO. Notice how the P is connected to the following e.

I checked on George W. Vnderburg. He served as sheriff of Jack County as follows:

Appointed June 28, 1869 by General J. J. Reynolds Special Order 192 and served until June 1869 when the office was declared vacant.

Elected November 8, 1872 and served until 1874.

Per Jan 09 email from Dave Johnson, Mrs C Lawrence married M T Coolie, Jack co TX, 29 Dec 1869. Mathias's son, James Cooley, is living next to Joshua Lawrence in Jacksboro 1870. He was the s/o James and Cynthia (Franks) Lawrence. This, then, may have been the wife of M T Coolie. Mathias Cooley is the only known person in Jack co who would match. Joshua Lawrence was killed in an Indian raid, 1875.
