Thanks to Sandy Stanton for pointing out "Chooley" in the census indexes.
That the following could be Ruben can only be regarded as a guess. Could the census taker have thought it was pronounced Khooley--a silent H. I certainly wouldn't understand the reasoning for that. I'd think our best chance of knowing for sure would be to look at a platt map, if one existed. The only other name on that page that I recognise as possibly being even remotely associated with the Cooleys is "Roler". Nevertheless, for the record, here's how I read this entry:

The eldest male in William's household was 26-45 and the eldest female was
16-26. There seems little doubt that Nancy was the Salley matriarch.

My assumption when first seeing the 1850 entry for Rubin was that Elizabeth Cooley was a granddaughter of Reuben's. Nancy Smothers may well have been a daughter. For a long time, I supposed that the elder Elizabeth was also a daughter and that Stephen, Cornelius and Lucretia were grandchildren. I still haven't ruled it out but Stephen's death certificate can't be denied. However, it's possible that Reuben had two older sons (see the 1830 census) in addtition to George. One of them -could- have been another Reuben. There were probably some answers in the Marion county KY tax lists and other records but most of that was destroyed during the Civil War. We'll probably never know. However, regardless of the exact relationships we can be pretty sure that Reuben was the patriarch of the family.
