I don't know why Reuben wasn't mentioned in Edward's 1822 will. Perhaps he had already been given a legacy, or else was out of favor with the old man. Reuben & Martha were present at the 5 Dec. 1822 estate sale, listed among the buyers. I do have pretty good proof of his lineage, from a side angle. When Edward's daughter Joanna Cooley died in 1863, she owned 44 acres in Bartholomew Co., land she had bought in 1846. Our Probate Record Book F1, p. 40, dated 9 Jan. 1866, lists the heirs of Joanna Cooley, and includes Reuben Cooley's heirs: Joseph Cooley (our line); Emanuel and Mary (Cooley) Burget; and Evan and Martha (Cooley) Elkins. Also included were Joanna's brothers Stephen and (your) John; the heirs of her late sister Elizabeth (Cooley) Brewer; two sons of her late brother Thomas; and "unknown heirs." The land was sold 17 July 1866, Deed Book S, p. 257, for $350. I suppose the "unknown heirs" were the ones they couldn't track down, & must not have gotten their shares.
