The following was published in "Bartholomew County, Indiana" in 1999 by the Bartholomew County Genealogical Society. I failed to note the page number.

Joseph and Mary (Leese) Cooley

Joseph Cooley was b. May 2, 1822 Indiana, the son of Reuben and Martha "Patsy" Cooley. Joseph had two sisters: Mary Cooley, b. 1820, m. Emanuel Burget February 12, 1837; and Martha Cooley, b. 1824, m. Evan A. Parther Elkins September 5, 1839. Reuben Cooley, residing in Washington Co. Indiana, purchased 160 acres of land in Orange Co. August 20, 1817. In 1818. this area became Lawrence Co., where Reuben was listed on census in 1820. In 1826, Reuben purchased land in Jackson Co., and was counted on the 1830 census there. He was living in Bartholomew Co. by November 1830 when he sold his Jackson Co. land. Reuben was born ca. 1794, North Carolina, d. 1854-1860. His wife Patsy was b. ca. 1794, North Carolina, d. 1860-1861. The three children sold their parents' last 40 acres in Jackson Twp. on January 19, 1862.

Joseph Cooley m. Mary Leese. October 16, 1841. at Columbus. Mary was b. ca. 1823 at Amsterdam, New York, and d. ca. 1861, probably at Waymansville. Joseph m.2 to Elizabeth (Noblett) Dowell, widow of George Dowell, on April 27, 1862. Joseph and Mary had seven children, all born in Waymansville: Elizabeth C., Reuben, William G., Martha C., Nancy Jane, Amanda C., and Joseph C. Joseph Cooley and his second wife had one child, Albert Cooley.

Joseph Cooley served in the Civil War, 93rd Regiment, Company A, alongside his son, William G. Cooley, who was killed at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Joseph survived the war and was mustered out August 10, 1865, but he died just two years later, November 3, 1867; he is buried at McLaughlin Cemetery, on the hill northwest of Waymansville. His wodow, Elizabeth, drew a pension, $8 beginning May 1869.

Elizabeth C. Cooley was b. September 11, 1842. She m.1 James McAllister, August 31. 1864; m. 2 Joel D. Noblett, December 30, 1868.

Reuben Cooley was b. December 20. 1844, d. September 2, 1848. He is buried at McLaughlin Cemetery with his father.

William G. Cooley was b. August 10, 1847, d. July 6, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Martha C. Cooley was b. March 9, 1850, and was still unmarried as of February 12, 1872 when she received $63.63, her share of her father's estate. She may be the Martha Cooley who m. Frank McLaughlin, October 13. 1883.

Nancy Jane Cooley was b. July 20, 1853, d. January 12, 1921. She m.1 Samuel Kuhlman, February 8, 1872; and m. 2 John F. Winters, July 27, 1883. (See her separate biography with Samuel Kuhlman)

Amanda C. Cooley was b. July 17, 1856, d. February 24, 1902. She m. James Nelson Elkins, April 7, 1871.

Joseph C. Cooley was b. December 16, 1860, died before 1870. He is probably also buried at McLaughlin Cemetery.

Albert J. Cooley was b. August 29, 1866, the only child of Joseph Cooley with his second wife Elizabeth Noblett. Albert d. January 1889 and is buried at Jonesville.
