I'm not sure what the evidence is that this is the same Jonathan.

William H Haggard is listed as one of the heirs of William Matthews Cooley. Furthermore, the sheriff of Henry [county] is mentioned in the 1838 suit.

Widow Amy is on 1840 census:

1840 > MISSOURI > SCOTT > WOLF ISLAND
Series: M704 Roll: 232 Page: 64

On the same page is A J C Cooley, 20-30, with presumed wife, 20-30. No
children. Does anyone know who A J C was? This was probably a newly
married couple.

William Grundy Cooley (20-30) is on page 66. I see that WMC's son in-law,
Isaac Pile, and W G Cooley's brother-in-law, Joseph Webster, are on the
same page. Could A J C have been an unidentified son of WMC's?

From notes re: the 1838 lawsuit:

(Wm M Cooley, d 1823)
..Richard Cooley
..Jonathan Cooley
..(Joel Cooley, d 1812)
....William G Cooley
....Elizabeth Cooley (c1812-) m Joseph Webster
..Ann Cooley (c1811-) m Isaac Piles
