Jonathan Cooley

I have found information on a Jonathan L Cooley who was born in Tennesee around 1842. He arrived at the California Veterans Home in Yountville on December 5, 1894. He died at the home on May 18, 1926. He enlisted in the Civil War on February 1, 1864 and was discharged on April 8, 1865. The death certificate states he was born August 1, 1842 in Tennessee and his wife's name was Celia Cooley. It says that Jonathan's father was George and his mother was Nancy Hubbard, both from Tennessee.

I am trying to verify that this Jonathan is George A. Cooley's father. I have an obituary which states "George A. Cooley son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnath. Cooley was born at Eureka, Henry county, Missouri April 17, 1871". It also states that "When George was six months old, his mother passed away. Then he and his father moved to Oklahoma". The 1880 Federal Census has a George Cooley, age 8, born in Missouri, living in the household of J.A. Cooley, age 50 from Indiana. They were living in Madison, Mercer County, Missouri and the household included his wife, May Cooley, age 40 from Missouri, and another son, C.E. Cooley, age 10, born in Missouri.

Does anyone have any information on a Nancy Hubbard that married George Cooley in Tennessee that would link to the Jonathan that I have listed above? Or any info on a J.A. Cooley, C.E. Cooley, May Cooley, or Celia Cooley all from Missouri.

This would be the John L Cooley mentioned in the above post. Is it the same man?

The Jonathan who married Molly Parks is not this man. She and her family appears on the 1900 IT census. She's a widow.

In Reply to: Re: Jonathan Cooley by Beverly Webster

Beverly,

Yes I am still interested. I have a Certification of Vital Record from Napa County California on the death of Jonathan L. Cooley in 1926. It list his Father as George Cooley and Mother Nancy Hubbard both from Tennessee. It lists his birth as 8/1/1842 in Tennessee. I see where there are federal census records for Jonathan L. Cooley in 1920 in Napa, CA, 1860 in Weakly, TN, and 1850 in Weakly, TN.

My Great Great Grandpa, George A. Cooley was born in Henry County Missouri in 1871. He is listed in the Custer County Nebraska Federal Census in 1900, 1910,1920,and 1930. His Obituary lists his father as Jonath. Cooley, which I think is Jonathan L. Cooley from above.

I still have not made the connection and do not have George A's mothers name. But it states in George's Obiturary, that she passed away when George was six months old. I wonder if this is suppose to be six years old based on the household below with Elizabeth?

The period of time that I am having trouble with is 1870 to 1900. There is a John Cooley in the 1870 census for Henry county Missouri married to Elizabeth who died in 1875. There is a J.A. Cooley in the 1880 Mercer County Missouri Census who has a George in his household that is 8 years old. Not sure if these two households link to George A.

Also, it states in George A's obituary that after his mother passed away, he and his father moved to Oklahoma. And one of the other things that my grandpa talked about was that George A had a sister named Alice. Her Married name Alice Crockett. I have found Levi and Alice Crockett from Ottawa County Oklahoma census in 1910 and 1920. There is also, another family in this same area of Oklahoma around the same period. Jonathan Lycurgus Cooley and Mollie Parks. Children Jennie, Mollie, Ida, Josie, Richard, Rober, Charles who married Phoebe Crotzer. Like Jonathan L. several of these children ended up in California.

I've been looking at this on and off for a long time. I'm trying to make the connection between George A. Cooley from the 2nd paragraph above and Jonathan L. and George's sister Alice. Any information you have to share would be appreciated.

Thanks for your response,
Scott

According to the same book, the were married Mar 17, 1920. This, then, may have been a second marriage for Jonathan.

I think this is sorted out. The hook is that Alice Crockett was in the
same county as Richard Cooley, the son of Mollie Parks. It seems clear
that Jonathan married three times:

1. Phoebe Elizabeth Hendrick Moler Huffman Cooley
a. George A Cooley, b April 17, 1871, Henry Co MO
b. Nancy Alice Cooley, b May 1873, m Levi Crockett

Jonathan and "Elizabeth" appear with her children from her previous
marriages, 1870, Henry Co MO. She died in 1875.

2. Mary "Mollie" Parks

a. Robert L Cooley (1877-1962) m Alice May Russell or Russett
b. Richard Monroe Cooley (1879-1950) m Ida Miller
c. Charles William Cooley (1883-1962) m Phoebe Crotzer
d. Jenney E Cooley (c1885-)
e. Josephine Cooley (c1887-)
f. Molly P Cooley (c1890-)

Since Mollie is living with her son Richard in 1900, I'm guessing that
Jonathan had left for California by then. Perhaps they divorced. If so,
a record might exist.

3. Cecilia Langworthy

No children.

We know from Alice's marriage notice that her father were present in 1890.
In 1894 he shows up in the soldier's home in California.
