From a May 2009 email from James Cooley...

I have compelling reasons to believe his father was James Cooley, b. 1793 or 94, NC, though my main source is the 1850 Dickson Census, which does not list E.C.!

EC's Cooley death certificate names John Cooley and Martha Bearden as parents. Jim Cooley of Las Vegas found this:

Martha BIERDEN
John COOLY
23 Nov 1835
Monroe, MO

The 1900 census for EC says that he was born in Oct 1835.

A Nancy Cooley, age 26, is on the next page from EC, 1860 Decatur co TN. There are children in the household but not husband. She was born in TN so is probably a sister-in-law rather than sister.

Is this Martha Cooley the mother of EC?

Taken from my email to Jim Cooley, May 2010. Note that THIS IS SPECULATION!

--quote--
I looked for the male Cooley kids in both Nancy's and Martha's households
for later census years last night but found none.

If we accept that the Martha in 1860 is EC's mother (it's certainly
possible) and accept that the others are related, then we come up with the
possibility of the following family. (I read the birth place of M C Cooley
as MO.)

Martha
..male Cooley m Nancy (c1834)
....Mary C Cooley (c1851)
....Robert Cooley (c1858)
....Joan Cooley (1860)
..EC Cooley (1834/35 MO)
..MC Cooley (c1839 MO)
....Wm E Cooley (c1858 TN)
....W R Cooley (1859 TN)
..Mary A (c1842 MO) m Oat Storey

--endquote--

Elizabeth Cooley (1831) who married John Calvin Bailey could also be iicnluded in the above.

If we include Elizabeth Bailey and the names found living with James and
Martha Cooley in Dickson county in 1850, we have this:

Martha
..male Cooley m Nancy (c1834)
....Mary C Cooley (c1851 TN)
....Robert Cooley (c1858 TN)
....Joan Cooley (1860 TN)
..Elizabeth Cooley (1833 MO) m John C Bailey
..EC Cooley (1834/35 MO)
..Willows Cooley (c1837 MO)
..MC Cooley (c1839 MO)
....Wm E Cooley (c1858 TN)
....W R Cooley (1859 TN)
..Polly Cooley (c1840 MO)
..Mary A (c1842 MO) m Oat Storey

In the 1920 census he's 84 (mis-indexed as 34). He gives parents' births as MO.

In the 1880 census, he gives parents birthplace as NC.
In 1900, parents are given as MO/NC (Milo says MO/GA)
1910, he says MO/MO
