A 1938 Reunion

Received the following abstracted newspaper notice from Marilyn Kromrey (3007 Via Montez, San Jose, CA 95132) as reprinted in Perry County Heirlines, Vol. VII, Summer 1989, No. 2, page 17 [P.O. Box 276, Junction City, OH 43748]. It was first published in Abstracts From Somerset (Ohio) Press, 1938.

A family reunion, at which 9 brothers and sisters averaging over 75 years of age were present, was held at Saltillo, OH on July 3, 1938. The 9 brothers and sisters are sons and daughters of William H.1& Barbara Ann Pettit of Perry Co. Another son, Lawrence Pettit, 61, of Magnetic Springs, OH was unable to attend the reunion. Those present were: Elizabeth Slatzer, 86 of Somerset; Jane Shreves, 84 of Saltillo; Izehar Pettit, 82 of Buckeye Lake; Sarah Guest, 78 of Saltillo; Clara Williams, 75 of Saltillo; William Pettit, 73 of New Lex.; George Pettit, 71 of Sego; Finley Pettit, 66 of Saltillo; and Clem Pettit, 63 of Saltillo. The Pettits were parents of 12 children, ten still living, 2 dying in infancy. (Thur., July 28, 1938.

Corrections for bio on Samuel Pettit of Nehamia County, NE. (TPC July 1989 pp. 75 & 76)

Birthdate of Samuel is in question. Bio has 3 June 1821, IGI [International Geographical Index] has 8 June 1823. His brother Melancton, was born 21 May 1821!

Samuel's parents: father David B. Pettit's birth should be 11 Feb. 1784 (IGI).
mother Asenthis Elms birth year should be 1794, she was aged 56 in the
1850 census Allen Co., OH page 249 (See also TPC Oct. `88 p. 40).

They were married in 1810 (IGI) because their first child, Jonathan, was born 7 Sept. 1811. The had 6 sons and 3 daughters. (IGI)

[July 16, 1989] Records copied at Staten Island Historical Society, Richmond Town, NY. The cemetery is abandoned now and the stones not there, but someone copied them in the 1920's. The old cemetery is just up the highway from the NY City garbage dump.

A Union Casualty

This came from Theodore W. Bozarth (River Rd., Rt.2 Box 168, Titusville, NJ 08560).

THOSE HONORED DEAD: UNION CASUALTIES AT GETTYSBURG, John W. Busey, Hightstown, NJ: Longstreet House, 1988. (Complete list of all Union soldiers killed or mortally wounded during the battle, 1-3 Jul 1863-TWB)

Petitt, Jesse (Pvt), Co B, 95th PA Inf (2nd Brigade, 1st Division, VI Corps), wounded in arm, thigh and abdomen and killed 2 or 3 Jul; from Phila. (Only person killed in this Regt; nature of wounds suggests a stray shell may have exploded among troops held in reserve. His military record would give more details; if he left a wife or dependent parent, a pension record may exist in Natl Archives.)

An 1850 Death

The following is found in the May 1989 edition of The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey under "US 1850 Census Mortality Schedules" for Ocean County. Note that Ocean County was formed from Monmouth County that same year.
