A Lead

Early last fall I had the occasion to visit the courthouse in Putnam Co., MO. For years I and others have been trying to prove or disprove that Joseph Pettit and his wife Elizabeth (Mohler) died there. That proof has yet to be discovered; however, the following document is significant.

William H. Pettit was a son of Joseph and Elizabeth. He was on trial in 1906 for tearing down a fence in a property dispute.

State of Missouri ----- Plaintiff )
against ) In the Circuit Court of Putnam County Missouri
Wm. H. Pettit --------- Defendant )

November Term 1906. Case No. 7000.

Now come the defendant in the above entitled cause and mooves the court to continue said cause, to the next term of this court for the following reasons; to wit: First ---- That the mother of defendant is now seriously and dangerously sick at her home and requires the constant care and attention of this defendant, that the moover hereof is advised by the attending Physician that his mother is likely to die at any time.

        [signed] W H Pettet
                       Defendant.

Subscribed and sworn to before me this the 1st day od [sic] Dec. 1906.

Surry County, N.C. Probate

This came from Loretta Taylor (6411 Seven Oaks Dr., Falls Church, VA 22042). Could this Benjamin be the grandfather of Benjamin Pettitt, husband of Charlotte Poindexter? (See her pension records this issue. Note the mention of Sprinkle in both documents.)

A Family Reunion, 1990

This time we're probably going to call it the GRAND REUNION OF THE DESCENDANTS OF STACY PETTIT AND LUCY ELMA HENRY in order to back up a generation and include more folks, but our reunion will be held 27-30 December 1990 in Albuquerque.

..And Another

I received a letter, dated 29 Sep. 1989, from Mary and Bob Pettitt (3037 Mountain Top Dr., Highland, CA 92346) that starts:

"We are updating our family tree for a Pettitt family reunion we will have next summer in Missouri, and we are trying to find information regarding our ancestor, Thomas M. Pettitt."

The letter contains a brief bio containing the following facts: Thomas M. Pettitt b 7 November 1830, Stokes Co., NC; m 8 October 1859 to Ruthie Sandusky Jones. Children: Hezekiah Benjamin Robert Pettitt and Esther Nancy Ann Jane Pettitt. He died while a private with the Confederate Army at Petersburg, VA on 18 Aug 1862. His widow married Samuel W. Cornelious in 1867 and moved to MO.
