My great-grandmother was Sarah Theresa Pettitt (Pettet) born ca. 1849 KY. She was first married to a Vaughn, Daniel or Samuel. Family stories say that he was killed by his brother over a land quarrel ca 1877-79. My grandfather, George Oliver Vaughn, had said very little about his family except that his father had died when he was six years old and that he and his sister were put to work on a farm. Sarah gave birth to a daughter, Mattie Frances Vaughn, in Natural Bridge, KY on 8 May 1876. In the 1880 census, Wolfe County, Sarah is found with her second husband James Alen Spencer. She is listed as being sick. There is a one month old infant, William Spencer, listed in the household. I am searching for the line of Peter Pettit (ca. 1758 to 1843) who married Rachel ____ (ca. 1780-1859) in Dutchess County, NY. There were Pettits in the Milan and Clinton area as early as 1738. Peter is on the 1801 tax list for Clinton as well as the 1810 U.S. census. In about 1820 he moved to the Conklin - Kirkwood area of Broome County, NY. The Wildey family moved at the same time and part of the family still lives on the Wildey farm. There were at least two marriages between these families. Peter and Rachel had: Phebe, born 1802, Moses V., born 1808, James William born 1809, Eliza Ann born 1813 and Emory F. born 1814. Perhaps they had more children.
