Abner J. Pettit of St. Joseph County, Indiana

Although not a Pettit descendant, Claire Miller of Orlando, Florida, was kind enough to send the following article, copied from "History of St. Joseph County, Indiana" - Chas. C. Chapman & Co., 1880.

pages 833, 834:
Abner J. Pettit was born in Miami county, Ohio, June 18, 1830, and is the son of David and Elizabeth (Blue) Pettit, also natives of Ohio; he was brought up on a farm and received a common school education; he came with his parents to Mishawaka in 1835; he engaged in cabinet-making for eighteen months, then worked at the carpenter's and joiner's trade for a time; he clerked in a store two years, when he bought and moved "onto" a farm; in 1871 he engaged as ticket and freight agent with the Grand Trunk R.R. Co., taking charge of the Mishawaka station, which position he still holds. He married in 1860 to Miss Ann E. Smith, by whom he has 2 children: Hattie L., deceased, and Carrie Alberta. Mr. and Mrs. Pettit are worthy members of the Presbyterian Church, and he is a clerk of the session.
