The following came from Elvin Pettet in December, 2007. It came from a Perry County history. I made a couple of minor punctuation corrections.
Behtel M. E. Church was organized about 1837, with James Moore, Elias Moore, William Moore, Urias Moore, John Handsley and family, Alexander McClannahan, and some of the Petits as first members. James Moore was the first class leader. The first preachers were John Reed and Samuel Hamilton. They worshipped in a log school house near where they afterward built a hewed log church.
That house stood until about 1845, when the society having moved to Porterville charge, the house went down or was moved away, but the cemetery is kept up.
