The following is found in the supplement to the 30 Nov 1903 (Monday) edition of the Long Beach Evening Tribune, Long Beach, California, Vol V, No 299. Joseph Pettit is believed to have been the son of Thomas B Pettet, a shoemaker, of Morgan County, Ohio.

Joseph Pettit, an old soldier died this morning at his home on Second street between Locust and American avenues. He was 75 years old, a native of Morgan County, O., and was a member of the Ninety-seventh Ohio. He leaves a family. The funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Wilson-Hill undertaking parlors. Rev. Grant K. Lewis officiating. The G.A.R. will have charge of the services and internment will be at Signal Hill.
