Re: Hannah Cooley m Luke Barnett/Burnett

There are two reasons I'm so interested in Luke's family. First, there is
no authentic record of John's family. As far as I know, Dale Walker was
the first person to cobble together a fairly accurate family group sheet
for him. Only two of the sons are proven in the documentation--by land
deed to James and Reuben. But the paper trail, as weak as it is in some
cases, is greatly aided by genetics. And if John was patrilineally related
to any other colonial-era Cooley, there's a very good chance that DNA will
will lead the way.

But his daughters may have passed down genetic clues of their own. Will
the gentic results match one another proving they were likely sisters? And
was their mother Sarah Matthews, and was Sarah the daughter of James
Matthews? It's a long shot, but mitochondrial DNA can tell us if we're in
the ballpark on that. If the Matthews genealogy is correct, Sarah had at
least two sisters: Martha m Aaron Houston, and Mary m John Kerr. If they
were sisters and shared Mary McGill as their mother, their matrilineal
descendants will have matching mtDNA.

I've yet to prove a lineage using mtDNA. The reasons are principally
two-fold: the lineages are very difficult to track because the surname
changes every generation, and myDNA mutates very, very slowly, making it
better for so-called deep genealogy than for the genealogy of a dozen or
so generations that the Y is so helpful with, and perfectly suited to
tracking to colonial days. But, as more and more data becomes available,
the better the chances are that we will one day find good info.

So, we've got a good lead on Luke Barnett/Burnett's family. What about
William Blackburn? That may be him on the 1810 Casey co KY census. Has
anyone been able to further track him?
