Reading accounts like this reminds me how lucky we are to be here. That
our fathers
and forebears made it through such difficult times is hard to comprehend.
I'm also haunted by the fact that many of these brave men were given the
gift of literacy but only at the
twilight of their young lives. Adds an extra layer of tragedy on top
of the loss of a generation.
