Birth records were typically not kept that early--although some states or
counties within some states did. Virginia kept some early records, for
example. Most states had no requirement until the early 20th century.
Bible records are really the only likely spot for such records that early.
Sometimes copies of them were made for military pension record files.
Church records are also a possibility, but I've had success only once with
those.
It's surprising that Joseph C Cooley didn't know his grandfather's name
for his dad's death certificate. Maybe there was some shame associated
with it. Perhaps PC's dad died so young that he didn't know him at all and
simply had no reason to talk about him.
As Gloria demonstrated with the 1859 James Cooley clipping, we need to
keep googling. Eventually, it seems, something will come up. :)
