I'm learning a little about "private" or "family" SNPs. These are
mutations that have occurred a lot more recently than those that define
the haplogroups (such as our R1a1a), SNPs that are thousands, even tens of
thousands of years old. Private SNPs appear too infrequently for such
assignments. What this means is that, theoretically, a mutation might have
occurred among John Cooley's 59 million base pair on his Y chromosome that
was unique to him. This is pure fantasy at this point but such a marker
could determine whether or not William Henry Cooley was a descendant. Even
so, that would be mostly academic because genealogist's job is to
determine exact relationships. Nevertheless, I wish had I the resources to
go SNP digging!
