Michael, you have written a great report of what we know and what we don't
know about John Cooley, Sr. I was very intereted in this census you sent of
Stokes County, NC. One of John Cooley's(Joseph, John Sr.) sons, William
Cooley married Elizabeth Fields in Mo. I see more than one Fields family
living in Stokes County, NC in this census. Elizabeth Fields apparently was
born in Ky but came to Mo as an orphan, probably with Fields' uncles. These
uncles served in the same Civil War unit as William Cooley and his son,
Joseph Cooley( William, John, Joseph, John Sr.). I have no idea where in
Ky, Elizabeth Fields was born and have been unable to find her parentage but
this makes me wonder if the Fields and the Cooley's knew each other in NC
and Ky.before coming to Mo. You can find a lot of hints when you study the
neighbors of our ancestors.
Jane
