Hi Bonnie,
Having your sons test the Y chromosome would say a lot about the
Lilliwhite line but nothing about the Cooley line. Typically, the test for
autosomes are generally helpful to about 5 generations back. There might
be some old genetic artifacts that would match with other people that
*might* connect that far back, but tracing the connection is very
difficult, especially if there's any chance there could be multiple
relationships.
The other test is mitochondrial DNA. It says something about your
mother's, mother's, mother's, mother, etc.
If I've seen your lineage, I've forgotten it. Something could show up with
autosomes. The test at 23andMe is only $99. In addition to autosomes (the
chromosomes other than X and Y), they test the Y chromosome, the X
chromosome, mitochondrial DNA, and medical markers. It's fun, and you're
bound to learn something, but not necessarily something specific to the
Cooleys.
