Re: Here are some steps 23andMe customers might want to take

Don,

As far as I can tell, the Whitfields don't have SNPs at ftdna.

The other R1a1a Cooleys' (CF04) Y-STRs match to several Fergusons. But not
this one (N115616). His Y-STRs look more like ours than theirs.

I'm pulling the SNPs from here:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/R1a/default.aspx?section=ysnp

There's an almost identical match (regarding Ferguson) to a descendant of
Nicholas Byram, whose family went from County Kent to Ireland where
Nicholas was born in 1610. If the tester tested for CTS7179, it doesn't
show at ftdna. Neither the Ferguson nor Byram SNPs show tests for L175 and
L176.

I see only one MacDonald (15983) listed as L175+. You match 338 of 348
SNPs with him.

The Geno 2.0 SNPs are, of course, designed for deep ancestry. They're not
going to tell us anything about people we're related to in the last
300-400 years, which is what we need. I'm sure you're right that the Big Y
test will tell us. It's a little too pricey, though. :) In the meantime,
the Y-STRs are the best indicators.
