It seems more likely than ever that John was the one who committed suicide
in 1846. But he was not John H. That middle initial comes from the probate
records of James Cooley, the brother of Perrin Sr. Clearly, your John was
not of that family.

I've tried looking for more info on Angeline and Edward but have found
nothing other than Edward's presence in Illinois (1850?) with Perrin C
Cooley.

Although it seems clear that James and his siblings were Perrin Sr's
children there is no known primary evidence to show it. That they were
born in NC adds much weight to the case. We need to look carefully at each
one in hopes that an obit, family bible, county history, etc. shows up for
one of them that gives the needed. But we can say with a strong level of
confidence that this is the descent:

John Cooley poss m Sarah Matthews
Perrin Cooley m Sarah?
John Cooley m Martha Bearden

Of course, there are all the questions about whether John was previously
married, etc.
