I've just noticed kit #238168, a descendant of Chapman Cooley (1824-1905).
Pittsylvania county lies just north of Stokes county NC. Therefore, the
Cooleys from there are of interest to us. But, in fact, this tester is not
anywhere close to being a match to our clan.
The little I have on this family is at

The Cooley families I'm following, DNA-wise, are listed at
http://ancestraldata.com/ahnentafel/256/lineages/ -- Those with a red
stars have tested.
Once again, we've come up empty-handed in our search for a collateral
line. :( Judging from the lack of genealogical and genetic evidence, and
considering the multiple "memories" of English origins (see
http://ancestraldata.com/ahnentafel/256/#english ), not including Ron and
Chuck's family histories of a Jacobite-like origin, I'm evermore convinced
that John was not born in the colonies but immigrated--likely to Virginia.
The question is whether he came with brothers. Abraham, of course, remains
a likely target in our DNA hunt. (BTW, the story Ron was told was that
three brothers, John, James and Joseph came over under threat of execution
and that a fourth died during the voyage.)
