Duncan yDNA

The genealogies for the Duncans of the Fauquier county, Virginia area are jumbled. The available data has been gone over ad infinitum and ad nauseam--and we're still stuck with the same old conclusions, essentially that the data is mostly inconclusive. I think that yDNA can break the deadlock. It may not provide all the answers but it could tell us, for instance, if Marshall Duncan "The Elder" is the patriarch of these Duncans or whether my Charles Duncan really was a cousin of Landon Duncan.

Although the underlying concepts are simple, genetic genealogy can get complex. Many of the websites devoted to posting results are very cumbersome as there is a lot of data to be presented. What I've done here is show only where the results vary from those that otherwise match. Instead of showing all 37 values, for instance, I'm showing only one or two values for each person who has tested. In other words, of the 37 markers that the tester whose ancestor was John Duncan of Robertson county TN (kit #38182) had sequenced, none varied from the results of the majority others tested. We can then use John as a sort of guidepost. For example, the results for kit #38261 has two alleles that are in variance with John's. He can be said, then, to be a genetic distance of 2 from John Duncan.

The data presented here was taken from the Duncan DNA results at familytreedna.com (FTDNA) and from the Duncan Surname Association webpages at dsa.duncanroots.com. I largely copied/pasted then extracted and formatted what I needed "by hand". There could be any number of errors. These results by themselves mean little without the underlying genealogical information. I've added brief descriptions of the ancestors where I could find them.

One tester has identified Marshall Duncan, The Elder (kit #60251) as his ancestor. The 12 markers tested match perfectly with our "control" sequence.

Following this chart are the known male lineages of a number of Fauquier county Duncan ancestors.

I've put together what little I could of the male lineages for those Duncans that I'm interested in. This will serve me as a guide in locating potential testers. More people have tested than indicated here but they have not made their lineages public, making it impossible to come to any conclusions about the data. I welcome any corrections and additions to the following.

I believe this is the Charles Duncan mentioned on the 1787 tax list for Fauquier county, VA. There is only one tithable, himself we can presume, possibly meaning that this was a young family. We know that Charles and Peggy married only the previous year. There's a note in the entry stating that he was the son of Charles Duncan. It's a little too slim to go on but a close study of deeds may yeild something of value.

Y Descendants of ___ (m Chloe) Duncan

This is a rather controversial subject. Was Chloe herself a Duncan? Were her children illegitmate? It's certainly possible but I don't see that in the genealogical record. There is some DNA evidence to suggest that may be the case but only 12 markers in Landon's lineage were tested, which is inconclusive. There would need to be another tester in a collateral line (a descendant of Rev Charles Duncan, for instance) to lend credence to the test results. In other words, as they now stand, the test results say more about the tester's DNA (a genetic mismatch to this clan) than of Landon Duncan's DNA.

The structure of the following assumes that the Revs Landon and Charles were, in fact, brothers.

In Fauquier county VA deed, 6 Dec 1766, John Duncan Jr, son of John, was deeded land from John and Jean Darnell. Then in 1768, John Duncan and wife Dinah deeded the same land purched from "John Darnell, and Jane his wife." This proves that John Jr's father was another John Duncan, still living as of 1766.

John's DNA profile is nearly indentical to Joseph's (m Lydia Hooe). were they brothers?

This haplotype is at great variance with the other Duncans of the region. If it holds up to subsequent testing through a collateral line then it can be concluded that this John Duncan was not related to the others of the Fauquier county region.
