Probable homeland for the Velda clan.1
Hundreds of mitochondria are found outside the nucleus of every cell. Their job is to provide the power needed by the cell to perform its functions. The remarkable thing is that mitochondria has their own DNA—and that comes exclusively from our mothers. The father's sperm has energy-providing mitochondrial DNA in its tail. However, virtually none of it survives in the egg. Since the mother's mtDNA has nothing to recombine with, it is passed on, unchanged, to her children. Therefore, child and mother have the same mtDNA—generation after generation. The significance is that my father's mtDNA is a virtual clone of Fanny Laurent's mtDNA, as is true for every one of her matrilineal descendants. Here's Dad's known matrilineal descent. Because of this reliable pattern of inheritance, Dad's mtDNA was a clone of that which belonged to Marie Josephe Salomon, born in the mid-eighteenth century.
Dad's mitochondrial DNA was tested at Family Tree DNA. Their tests found eight bases to be in variance with the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS), a sort of "standard model" for mtDNA, which indicate that his matrilineal ancestors belong to Haplogroup V (nicknamed the Velda clan).1 HVR1 stands for Hypervariable Region 1. Can you guess what HVR2 means? :)?
Although my father and his brother Howard were genetic mitochondrial dead-ends (as are all men), Marie had three sisters. Her mtDNA survives among their matrilineal descendants. An important thing to note about mtDNA is that it carries no genetic information that codes for a person's traits, physical or otherwise. That "information" is found in the nuclear DNA. Mitochondrial DNA exists only to provide the proteins needed for the mitochondria to perform its principal function, to power our cells. From Oxford Ancestors: "The clan of Velda (Scandinavian for ruler) is the smallest of the seven clans containing only about 4% of native Europeans. Velda lived 17,000 years ago in the limestone hills of Cantabria in northwest Spain. Her descendants are found nowadays mainly in western and northern Europe and are surprisingly frequent among the Saami people of Finland and Northern Norway." 2. I'd like to propose to anyone who has had their mtDNA sequenced that they post it in this modest way on their website. A simple netwide search will bring it up. (In my opinion, the Internet's biggest failure lies in exactly that which it was to resolve: the decentralization of data and resources. There are a lot of reasons for this failing, not the least of which is commercialization. Widely-used, simple and discreet placement of data could help reestablish the net's altruistic principles.)
