William Allison Cooley
William A Cooley c1917
Joseph Cooley's son, William Allison Cooley, was killed
at Meuse-Argonne
during World War I. He and his brother, McCabe, were
running alongside one another across "no man's land" when William was hit by
a German shell. McCabe was told to keep advancing.
Dear Coz. Fern. I recd. a letter from you sometime ago. I am really
ashamed that I have not answered sooner but if you will excuse me this time
I will try to be more prompt next time. How are all of you. Cabe & I are
just fine & haveing [sic] a good time. We are in the trenches now. oh, oh,
(wait a minute) a big shell just burst above our dugout & the scharpnel
falling on the tin roof sure is making some noise. This is our third time
in the trenches. Like it fine up here. In fact we have a lovely summer
home up here & if we could only convince Jerry that his shells are very
annoying at times perhaps he would ease up once in a while, but at that I am
sure that they are just as busy dodging our shells as we are theirs. I saw
Lee J. about three weeks ago They were stationed at the same town as we
were. I have seen all the boys that were at Doniphan with us, since we have
been over here. I got a letter from Vernal today she said there was going
to be a Chautauqua at Lucerne [in] a week & the proceeds go to the red cross.
Well we sure have got to give it to the red cross & ymca workers because
they are sure doing their bit over here as well as the rest of us. Well
there is not much more to tell you this time so I will close. Hope to hear
from you soon. as ever Allison C.
1919 Letter
France, February 4, 1919
Joseph W. Cooley, Lucerne, Mo.
My Dear Mr. Cooley:
I am the Chaplain 140th; and have been for 18 months. I saw McCabe
yesterday. He is looking well and has made a fine record. He has done his
duty and in every way has been a son in whom you may well be proud.
He and William A. joined the 140th Infantry Church last September. It is an
"Allied church" and means that the Christian men of the regiment are working
together, and promise to report for duty their first week home at their home
church.
Of the men in this church, ninety per cent were killed or wounded in the six
day drive in the Meuse-Argonne, Sept. 26- Oct 1.
This shows the actively Christian men were to be depended upon, and is
probably the largest percentage of causalities known, almost twice as many
as were suffered by the regiment as a whole.
The little cross enclosed is given to each man and in view of the history
has become a badge of honor.
William A. joined a week before he went into the Argonne. He was killed
September 29, and is buried near Chaudron Farm House, with his grave plainly
and regularly marked. His body will be brought home after all is over, if
desired.
I am sending you his War Cross and Membership card. It will be a comfort to
you to know that he went into the battle in the name of the Lord, with a
heart prayerful and unafraid, and with the full determination to do his
Christian duty.
I know it is hard to lose him, and that your heart is heavy. But it will be
some help in bearing your burden to know that he died bravely, nobly and as
a Christian who is ready to do his full duty. And God was with him in that
hour. I am sure he suffered very little.
You have two splendid boys. You must think of William A. as far more alive
than we are. He has laid down his life for the right. He has borne your name
with honor and given it a high place in history. For these were the men who
won the war and who make America what she is.
In your sorrow you must also thank God for what he has given you--two sons,
brave, clean Christian gentlemen. Men to be trusted anywhere. Men with high
ideals and true to them. For such a man as William A. Cooley, death has no
sting, and over him no grave can have a victory. He has followed his Master
in the way of sacrifice and with Him won the victory.
With deep sympathy for your sorrow, and the prayer that God may give you
strength and comfort, I am
Faithfully yours,
Evan A. Edwards,
Chaplain 140th Infantry

My Dear Mrs. Shelton,
I mailed a copy of the history as requested. The price is $2.50, which you
may remit at your convenience.
McCabe has probably told you all that could be told about William's death.
Both he and McCabe joined the 140th Infantry Church. I enclose one of the
cards and tokens. On page 134 of the history you will find a description of
it. In death men are what they have been before. And I did not mean to
convey the confussion that I was with him. You can imagine how hard it was
to try to keep a record of 1800 men killed, wounded and captured in 5
days!
My records show that William - "Bill" we called him - was killed Sept. 29th,
and buried near Chaudron Farm. His body has probably been removed to
Romagne, which is the Army Cemetery not far distant.
My recollection is that McCabe passed him just after he was wounded, and
called to him. He said he was hurt, but not badly. McCabe was needed and
hurrying forward at the time could not stop. I know he felt terribly about
it, but it was one of the noble things done.
William was wounded in the head and shoulder, and died within an hour
according to information given me. The shock of the wound produces loss of
feeling for a time. Often men shot in the arm, leg, or body would find out
they were wounded only by the blood. The suffering comes later. On the
field (?) some men lay wounded 48 hours before we could get them off, there
was no groaning or screaming. Lots of it was grit, but part was due to the
deadening of the nerves by shock. I wish I had more information for you.
After reading the history, you will understand better. I was gassed the
third day, but refused to go out, and was weak and not much good the latter
part of the time. But I did my best and staid with them. I loved these
men.
McCabe and Bill joined the 140th Church among the very first. They were
both the finest. McCabe was terribly broken up. Once he came and staid
several hours with me, just crushed. I am both fond and proud of him. Glad
he is married. He has the right to happiness. I never knew a manlier,
truer, finer soul than Bill. I wish I could talk with you. I know God was
with him and death was easy. You have the right to feel very proud of both
your brothers. And it is a priveldge to be any help in any way to the
families of my boys.
Faithfully yours,
Evan A. Edwards

The following was published in the Unionville Missouri Republican August 17, 1921.
The body of William Allison Cooley who was killed in the Meuse Argonne
Offensive was returned to Lucerne on August 12, 1921. Funeral services were
conducted from the Methodist Church of which he was a member. Rev. W.A.
Pollock preached the sermon. He was buried with full military honors by the
American Legion Post at Lucerne which bears his name "Allison" as he was
known to many of his friends. Enlisted on the 13th.day of the month, was in
the service 13 months, was born on the 13th. day of the month and was
buried of the 13th. Allison was the only Lucerne boy to lose his life in
the World War.
