To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting
Know ye that we for and in consideration of the sum of Ten pounds for every
hundred acres hereby granted, paid into our Treasury by JOHN COOLEY, have
given and granted and by these presents do give and Grant unto the said JOHN
COOLEY, a Tract of Land containing one hundred and fifty Acres lying and
being in Our County of Stokes, (late Surry) In the fork of Oldfield Creek,
Beginning on a white oak in JOHN COOLEYs line, turning North thence forty
six Chains and an half to a post, West fifteen Chains and an half to WILLIAM
WAGGONERs line, South thirty one and a half Chains to said WAGGONERs Corner,
West in said line forty four Chains to WILLIAM JAMES's Corner, South fifteen
Chains to a pine, East five Chains to a pine, then South two Chains to a
post then East fifty four and an half Chains to JOHN COOLEYs line-at the
beginning. As by the plat hereunto Annexed doth appear: Together with all
Woods, Waters, Mines, Minerals, Headitaments, and appertenances, to the said
land belonging, or appertaining to hold to the said JOHN COOLEY, his heirs
and assigns forever. Yielding and paying to us such sums of money yearly or
otherwise, as Our General Assembly from time to time may direct Provided
always that the said JOHN COOLEY Shall Cause this Grant to be Registered in
the Regesters Office of Our Said County of Stokes (late Surry) Within twelve
Months from the date hereof, Otherwise the same shall be Void and of No
Effect. In Testimony whereof, We have Caused these Our letters to be made
patent, and One Grant seal to be hereunto affixed, Witness SAMUEL JOHNSTON
esquire Our Governor Captain General and Commander in Chief at Edenton the
8th day of May in the Xiiith year of Our Independence and in the year of Our
Lord, One-Thousand Seven hundred and Eighty Nine.

Edward Cooley to Archibald Campbell1, 1801
This Indenture made this third day of March 1801 between Edward Cooley
of the county of Stokes State of North Carolina of the one part &
Archibald Campbell of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said Edward Cooley for and in consideration of the sum
of ten dollars to him in hand paid by the said Archibald Campbell the
Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said Edward Cooley, hath given
granted Bargained, sold and made over and by these presents do Bargain Sell
and make over in Fee Simple unto him the said Archibald Campbell his heirs
and assigns forever a certain tract of land lying and being in Stokes
County, on a branch of the Middle Fork of Muddy Creek, known by the name
of the Rocky Branch. Beginninq at a small white oak being an Inset Corner of
the said Edward Cooley's land, thence South one hundred perches to pointer
near David Walker's line, West forty three perches to pointers in the
Moravian Line, North on the said line one hundred perches to a small
hickory, thence to the beqinning. Containing twenty six acres and one
hundred and forty perches of land, being part of a tract containing one
hundred and fifty one acres Granted by the state to the said Edward Cooley,
Dated at Raleiqh the 14 October 1800 No. 548 Registered in Stokes Book C
folio 330. To have and to hold to the said Archibald Campbell his heirs and
assigns forever: with all and singular the Right, Title, Privileges,
Improvements and appurtenances thereunto belonging, or in any wise
appertaining, and he the said Edward Cooley doth for himself his heirs
&ce covenant and agree to and with the said Archibald Campbell, that he
the said Archibald Campbell his heirs and assigns shall and may forever
hereafter peaceably and quietly have hold occupy possess and enjoy, the said
described tract of land & premises free and clear from all Incumbrances
or molestation from any person whatever, and the said Edward Cooley doth
oblige himself his heirs &ce. the said land and premises, unto the said
Archibald Campbell his heirs and assions to warrant and forever defend
aaainst the lawful claim of all persons whatever. In testimony whereof the
said Edward Cooley hereunto set his hand and seal the day & year first
above written.

This Indenture Made this twenty eight day of October in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five Between John Cooly of Stokes
County & State of North Carolina of the one part & Edward Cooly of
the said County & State of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said
John Cooly for & in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds
current money of the state to him in hand paid by the said Edward Cooly the
receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained sold
& delivered and by these presents do grant bargain sell & deliver
unto the said Edward Cooly a certain tract or parcel of land lying &
being in the County of Stokes on the little fork of Oldfied Creek beginning
on a double line on MCarrells line runing East to a pine thence South to a
white Oak, Thence West to a pine thence North to the Begining Containing two
hundred & forty acres by estimation be the same more or less together
with all the right, title, claim and interest of the said John Cooly of, in
and to the same To have & to hold unto the said Edward Cooly, his heirs
and assigns forever to the only proper use & behoof of Edward Cooly his
heirs and assigns forever and the said John Cooly doth for himself his
heirs, executors, administrators and assigns covenant and agree to and with
the said Edward Cooly his heirs & assigns shall and may forever
hereafter peaceably and quietly have hold occupy possess & enjoy the
above describe tract or parcel of land with every part article &
appurtenances thereunto belonging free and clear from all tithe, hindrance
molestation & incumbrance whatever from him the said John Cooly or his
heirs executors administrators and assigns Binding and obliging himself and
every of them the said Land & premises with every part and article
thereunto pertaining against himself & every of them and against all
other persons whatsoever unto the said Edward Cooly his heirs & assigns
will warrant & forever defend. In Witness whereof the said John Cooly
hath hereunto set his hand & affixed his seal the day & date first

This Indenture made the blank_ day of blank_ in the year of our Lord One
thousand eight hundred four. Between John Cooley of the county of Stokes
State of NCarolina of the one part, and Reuben Cooley his son of the county
and state aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Cooley
for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds Lawful money of
the State aforesaid to him in hand paid, the Receipt Whereof the said John
Cooley doth hereby acknowledged. Have given granted Bargained and sold, and
by these presents Do give grant Bargain and sell, alien Enfeoff, and Confirm
unto the said Reuben Cooley his heirs & assigns forever a Certain tract or
parcel of land situate, lying and being in the county aforesaid, on both
sides of the Long branch of Oldfield Creek, containing one hundred twenty
nine and an half acres be the same more or less. Beginning part of a tract
granted by the state to John Cooley. Beginning at a Hickory James Cooley s
Corner and runs West seven chains and three quarters to a post oak and
forked pine in John Holland s line, North on his line twelve chains to his
corner poplar, West eight chains to a Hickory, North thirteen chains to a
post oak, East on John Cooley s old line fifty five chains to a Red Oak his
old corner, South twenty five chains to a stake James Cooley s Corner, West
to the beginning including house and plantation where the said Reuben Cooley
now lives. To have and to hold the aforesaid tract of land with every Right
and benefit hereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining, unto the said
Reuben Cooley his heirs and assigns Forever Together with all the advantages
of Land, Water Woods under Woods mines Minerals Tenements Improvements
Hereditaments unto the said Land belonging, to the only proper us and behoof
of him the said Reuben Cooley his heirs and assigns Forever and to no other
intent or purpose whatever. And the said John Cooley for himself and his
heirs Will to the said Reuben Cooley his heirs and assigns Warrant and
forever Defend the aforesaid land and premises free and clear from the
Molestation or hindrance of him the said John Cooley or of any person
whatsoever. In witness whereof the said John Cooley hath hereunto set his
hand and seal the day and year first above written.

This indenture made this blank day of blank in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred four Between John Cooley of the County of Stokes
State of NCarolina of the one part and James Cooley his son of the County and
State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Cooley for
and in Consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds current money of the
state aforesaid and to him in hand paid by the said James Cooley the Receipt
Whereof is hereby acknowledged Have Granted Bargained and Sold and by these
presents do give grant bargain and sell Enfeoff and Confirm unto the said
James Cooley his heirs and assigns Forever a certain tract or parcel of land
lying and being in the County of Stokes on both sides of the Long branch of
Oldfield Creek containing one hundred acres. It being part of a tract of
land granted by the state aforesaid to the said John Cooley. Bounded as
foll0ows Viz: Beginning at a Hickory in Reuben Cooley s line and runs West
on his line seven chains & three quarters to a post oak and forked pine in
John Holland s line, South on his line nine chains & three quarters to his
corner pointer East five chains to his corner pine, South twelve and a half
chains to a post oak near a branch East forty two chains and three quarters
to a small persimmon tree and Spanish Oak in John Cooley old line, North on
said line twenty two and a quarter chains to a stake Reuben Cooley's corner
thence West on this line to the first station. To have & to hold unto the
said James Cooley his heirs and assigns Forever, the aforesaid tract of land
with all and every right and benefit thereunto belonging or in any wise
appertaining together with all advantages of land Water Woods Underwoods
mines minerals Tenements Improvements & Hereditaments to the same belonging
unto the only proper use and behoof of him the said James Cooley his heirs
and assigns Forever and to no other use intent or purpose whatsoever. And
the said John Cooley for himself & his heirs Wills to the said James Cooley
his heirs and assigns warrant and Forever defend the aforesaid land and
premises free from the Molestation or hindrance of him the said John Cooley
or of any other person or person whatsoever. In Witness Whereof the said
John Cooley hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day and year first above

This Indenture Made the 2nd day of January AD 1805 between John Cooley
Senior of the county of Stokes State of N. Carolina of the one part and
James Cooley his son of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.
Witness that the said John Cooley, Senior for and in consideration of the
tender Love and affection which he hath and bequeath to his son the said
James Cooley and for the further consideration of the sum of Five pounds to
the said John Cooley in hand paid the Receipt whereof he doth hereby
acknowledge hat Given, Granted, Sold & Delivered, and by these presents in
open market and in due form of law give grant sell & deliver, alien Enfeoff,
Release and forever confirm unto the said James Cooley his heirs and assigns
atract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Stokes Waters of
Oldfield Creek, Beginning on a white Oak in said John Cooley's line thence
North to Charles Davis's line to a stake thence West with Waggoners's line
near to William James' old corner a post oak then South to a stake in John
Cooley's line, thence East along the said line to the beginning. Containing
ninety acres of land be the samemore or less. To have and to hold the said
Bargained land and appurtenances unto the aid James Cooley his heirs and
assigns Forever. And I the said John Cooley for my self my heirs doth by
these presents Warrant and defend the aforesaid Bargained premises unto the
said James Cooley his heirs and assigns Forever free & clear from
all Mortgages, Jointures, Entails, dowers, and from all & every encumbrance
whatsoever as a free Estate of inheritance, in fee simple forever. In
Testimony Whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal, the date above
written.

This Indenture made the 8th day of October AD 1809. Between Edward Cooley of
Stokes County State of NCarolina of the one part, and Westly Jean, John
Reed, George Thomason, Benjamin Young and Thornton Gwinn, trustees in trust
for the use and purposes herein after mentioned, all of the county of Stokes
and state of NCaro1ina of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said Edward
Cooley & Martha his wife, for an in consideration of the sum of one
dollar [?] to them in hand paid at & before the sealing and delivery of
these presents, the Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said
Edward Cooley and Martha his wife, hath given, granted, Bargained sold
Released & confirmed, and by these presents do grant Bargain sell
release confirm and convey unto them the said Westly Jean, John Reed,
George Thomason Benjamin Young Thornton Gwinn and their successors,
Trustees in trust for the use and purposes herein after recorded and
declared All the Estate, Rights title included, properly, claim and demand,
whatever Either in Law or Equity, which he the said Edward Cooley &
Martha his wife hath into or upon all and singular a Certain Lot or piece
of ground, situate lying & being in the County of Stokes, State of
NCarolina on the waters of Townfork, which is a prong of Dan River, Bounded
& Butted as follows. Beginning at a large popular near a Spring, thence
North, twelve degrees. West twenty one poles to a post oak, thence East two
poles to a stake, thence North thirteen poles & nine links to a post
oak, thence West to a small persimmon and a small Red Oak, thence South
thirteen poles and nine links crossing the Road to two small Red Oaks,
thence East nine poles to a stake thence South twelve degrees East, twenty
one poles to a small hickory, and thence East or nearly East one pole to the
beninning. Containing one acre, and twenty one poles, & being part of a
tract of Land of (blank) and granted by the state to (blank) which was duly
Registered. Together with all the houses, woods, waters, privileges and
appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and
to hold all and singular the houses, woods, waters ways and privileges
thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining to the said Westly Jean,
John Reed, George Thomason Benjamin Young & Thornton Gwinn. And their
successors in office forever: in trust they shall erect and build, or cause
to be erected and built thereon a house or place of Worship, for the members
of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in the United States of America,
according to the B[?] and discipline which from time to time may be agreed on
and adopted by the ministers or preachers of the said Church at their
General Conferences in the United States of America, and in future trust and
confidence that they shall at all times forever hereafter permit such
Ministers and preachers belonging to the said Church shall from time to time
be duly authorized by the General Conferences of the Ministers &
preachers of the said Church Methodist Episcopal Church, or by yearly
conferences Authorized by the said General Conferences and none other to
preach, and Explain Gods holy word, therein and in further trust and
confidence, that as often as anyone or more of the trustee herein before
mentioned shall die, or ceased to be a member, or members of said Church, to
call a meeting of the Remaining as soon as conveniently may be and when md
the Minister or preacher shall proceed to nominate one or more person to
fill the places of him or them, whose office or offices have been vacated as
aforesaid, provided the person or persons so nominated shall have been one
year a member or members of the said Church immediately preceding such
nomination, and of at least 21 years of age. And the trustees so assembled
shall proceed to Elect, and by a majority of votes approve the person or
persons so nominated to fill such vacancy, or vacancies in order to keep up
the number of Five Trustee forever. And in case of an equal number of votes
for or against the nomination the stationed minister or preacher shall have
the casting vote, Provided nevertheless that if the said trustee or any of
them or their successor have advanced money, or shall advance any sum or
sums of money, on amount of the said premises, and they the said Trustees,
or their successor be obliged to pay the sum or sums of money, they or a
majority of them shall be authorized to Raise the sum or sums of money by a
mortgage on said premises after notice given to the pastor or preacher who
has the oversight of the congregation, attending divine service on the said
premises, of the money due be not paid to the said Trustees, or their
successors, within one year, after such notice given, and if such sale shall
take place, the said Trustees or their successors, within one year, after
such notice given, and if such sale shall take place, the said Trustees or
their successors after paying the debt and all other expenses which are due
from the money arising from such sale, and Deposit the Remainder of the
money produced by or the said such sale in the hands of the steward or
stewards of the society belonging to or attending divine service on, said
premises, which surplus of net produce of such sale do deposited in the
hands of the said steward or stewards shall be at the disposal of the next
yearly conference Authorized as aforesaid, which yearly conference shall
dispose of the said money to the best of their judgment for the use of said
society. And they the said Edward Cooley & Martha his wife do by these
presents Warrant and forever Defend all and singular the before mentioned
and described Lot or piece of ground with appurtenance thereunto belonging
unto them the said Westly Jean John Reed George Thomason Benjamin Young
& Thornton Gwinn and their sucessors Chosen and appointed as aforesaid
from the claim or claims of him the said Edward Cooley and Martha his wife,
their heirs executors or administators, and from the claim or claims of all
persons whatever. In Testimony Whereof the said Edward Cooley & Martha
his wife, have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seal, the day and
year first above written.
