I've been exploring the Fayette county Fosters a little bit with W L Lynn on
genforum's Fayette County, Pennslyvania Forum.

My Foster family was from Franklin Twp and three uncles were of the age to
be the father; William born 1777, John born 1787 and James 1789. My 3rd
great Henry was born in 1797 and he was not the father.

I have the listing for William Foster( my uncle) in 1810 and 1830 but not
for 1820. He was living in Franklin Twp both times. I will need to determine
where he was in 1820. In the 1810 census he had four daughters between the
ages of 0-10 so he could be the father. As for John F. Foster born 12/5/1788
his first child was born on 1/7/1821. His father John born (brother of my
4th great grandfather David) died in 1810. His wife Elizabeth Ferree Foster
was 48 at the time of his death so your Anna Jane could have been a
daughter.
Some other Fayette county Foster notes:
- John Foster of Franklin twp, son of David, married Martha McKee 14 Feb
1818--too late to have been Anna Jane's parents.
- James Foster of Franklin twp, son of David, married Sarah Harvey 29 Aug
1822--again, too late.
- Another son of David, Henry Foster had first -known- child in 1826.
- A John Foster and Catherine Cosgray with eldest known child, Eliza Jane
Foster, born 1820 in Fayette county.
- A Thomas Foster and Margaret Shreve had two unnamed daughters born
between 1811 and 1815. Thomas was born in Bedford county 1785, died 1866 in
Grant county IN. His parents, Basil and Mary (Penn) Foster were from
Maryland.
- A James Foster born 1771 in Myricksville, Bristol County, Massachusetts
had unnamed daughter born between 1811 and 1815 in Fayette county. Sons
Isaac and John L Foster went to Dearborn county, Indiana.
- Thomas Jacob Foster and Margaret Slough, both of Maryland, had children
born as early as 1819. The family went to to Dearborn county IN.
It appears that the Thomas Foster/Margaret Shreve family was in Indiana
by 1830. It would seem unlikely to me, then, that Anna Jane, who was
clearly still in Pennsylvania, would have been their child.
1830 Fayette co PA
There's only one household on the 1830 census where Anna Jane Foster, if
properly enumerated, would fit. This, of course, does not constitute proof
of her parentage. There could be any number of factors involved that could
give us the false impression. Nevertheless, it presents a viable line of
inquiry.
