In a 1982 letter, James G Ashenurst states:162
I remember my father mentioning that his grandmother (Euphemia) was a "very
good woman" and that she smoked a pipe.
Will of Euphemia Ashenhurst, 1879
In the Name of God Amen = I Uphamia Ashenhurst of the Village Aledo in the
County of Mercer and State of Illinois aged Sixty Nine years past and being
of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and
testament in the manner following that is to say
First and principally I commit my soul to God who gave it, and my body to
the earth to be as decently intered [sic] as circumstances will admit of
without any unnecessary delay
Second. It is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be
fully paid after which such worldly estate both real and personal as it hath
please God to entrust me with I dispose of in the following manner to
wit
Third. I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Susan M Ashenhurst my
household and kitchen furniture of every kind and one hundred dollars after
which the balance remaining of my said Estate shall be divided equally share
and share alike to my daughters Margaret Shaw, Elizabeth Tom, Nancy Cowder,
Mary Jane Willis and Susan M Ashenhurst
Fourth. I am not unmindful of my sons William Ashenhurst, John Ashenhurst,
Francis Ashenhurst and Oliver T Ashenhurst for whom I make no provision in
this my last will and testament for the reason that their father my late
husband Oliver Ashenhurst deceased in the last will and testament gave
devised and bequeathed to them the largest part of his estate
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelve day of
November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy
nine.
