The following is found in the article "The Descendants of John Cooley and
Selah Wright" published serially by the Quarterly Bulletin of
The Cooley Family Association of America (October 1943 to January 1948). It
was compiled by Mary D. Stoops:
Probably in 1815, John Cooley married Selah Wright, born July 20, 1793,
in North Carolina, probably in Rowan County, daughter of William and Martha
(Morgan) Wright, and granddaughter of Richard Wright, the emigrant. The
1850 Census calls her "Sela", gives her age as 57, and states that she was
born in North Carolina. She was a clever writer of doggerel, as witness the
following by her:
Some folks may think it very wrong
For Selah Cooley to make a song,
But let them think as they may
I've raised five sons to vote for Clay.
"Celia" Cooley appears on the 1870 census for Bartholomew county IN. I've
been unable to find her on the 1880 census nor can I find a notice of her
death. I presume she probably died by then.
